Laser Vision Correction
What is laser vision correction?
Laser vision correction (LVC) is the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism using a state of art; computer controlled excimer cold laser. There are currently two procedures that utilize the excimer cold laser, Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK).
The cold laser carefully and without any pain reshapes the cornea, which allows light to be redirected on the retina inside of the eye. This allows the patient the ability to perceive clear visual images and the need for glasses or contact lenses are eliminated. Laser vision correction is entirely different from Radial Keratotomy (RK). RK is a surgical procedure that involves a series of freehand incisions on the cornea.

Why is a Pre-Procedure Consultation Important?
Before you proceed with laser vision correction, Dr. Anderson strongly suggests you have a pre-procedure consultation. The primary objective of the consultation is to determine whether you are a candidate for laser vision correction, and if so, which procedure would be most appropriate for you. If you schedule a consultation, there is no obligation to move forward with the procedure.

It is important for you to realize that even if it is determined that you are not a candidate today, it does not mean that you will not be a candidate in the future. However, laser vision correction is not for everyone, and some patients (for example, those with certain diseases of the eye involving the cornea or retina), will never be candidates. The best way for you to find this out is by having a thorough examination with Dr. Anderson.
While laser vision correction has proven to be overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses, the degree of improvement may vary from individual to individual. Results cannot always be predicted and can never be guaranteed, however, Dr. Anderson works with only laser centers that offer a Lifetime Commitment with no-charge enhancements.
Monovision options:
If you are a nearsighted laser candidate, then monovision may be for you. Monovision is a technique when we fully treat one of your eyes, usually your dominant eye, for distance vision. We then undercorrect your non-dominant eye, or not treat it at all (if it is only mildly nearsighted), leaving this eye slightly myopic for improved reading vision. Monovision lets you maintain your reading vision in one eye, which may help you to avoid reading glasses once you develop presbyopia. As always, you must give up a little distance sharpness to gain this near vision. During your consultation, you can discuss this option with Dr. Anderson, and together we will decide what the best choice is for you.
What Happens on the Day of the Procedure?
On the day of your procedure, you should arrive at the Laser Center as rested and relaxed as possible, and should arrive at your scheduled appointment time. You will first go through a pre-operative procedure, which will include basic vital signs, corneal topography, pachymetry, refraction and orb-scan. The administration of mild eye drops and sanitizing of the area around the eyes is performed in the pre-op area. After this, you will enter the surgical room where the surgeon will verify all of the information and and view the surgical area for any missed abnormalities. Once you are cleared by the surgeon, you will move to the VISX cold laser for treatment, which will last only a few minutes.
The most natural response prior to your procedure is a mixture of both eager anticipation and nervousness. Most laser patients describe similar feelings before their procedure, so be reassured this is extremely normal.

Your Surgeon's Role:
Lasik Inquiries: lasik@villageopt.com
All laser surgeons that Dr. Anderson co-manages with have had been extensively educated in all aspects of laser vision correction by completing a hands-on training and certification program offered by the laser centers. Equally important and critical to the outcome of your laser procedure are the pre and post-procedure stages, which include your consultation appointment, your education throughout the process and finally, your follow-up care. The success of your laser procedure is dependent not only on the expertise of your surgeon, but also on the safety, accuracy, and sophistication of the equipment used. Our affiliated laser centers, Colorado Laser Surgeons and TLC Laser Eye Centers, use only FDA approved excimer cold lasers to achieve the best results in the safest way possible. The surgical room is a controlled environment of 50% humidity and 70 degrees. This requirement is necessary for accurate repeatable results from the laser. A corneal topographer and Orb-scan are used to test your vision, measure the degree of your visual problem, create a map of the surface of your eye, and measure the thickness of your corneas. While looking for any irregular or abnormally thin areas on your cornea, the Orb-scan provides information on whether you will be able to continue with the laser procedure.
The information from your eye exam is used to program the state-of-the-art computer software, which calculates the required corneal change and then helps the laser make this change. Your surgeon programs and operates the laser, maintaining control throughout your procedure.
Precautions for the Procedure:
Once your procedure is complete you will be escorted to the post-op area where you will remain for twenty minutes with you eyes closed. After you have completed this amount of time, your eyes will be viewed under high magnification. If the flap or PRK area are stable, and have begun healing correctly, then you will be cleared to go home immediately to rest. Additional drops will be placed in your eyes and medication will be given to you to use over the next few days.
If you have PRK, a bandage contact lens will typically be placed in your eye. It is a very thin, clear lens which along with the eye drops used dramatically reduces any discomfort you may feel following the procedure. Even if you have never used contact lenses before, do not be concerned, as the surgical staff will insert the lens. On your first post-operative appointment, Dr. Anderson will view the healing of your corneas. The corneas will completely heal in 72 hours, but Dr. Anderson will determine when it is safe to remove the lens for you.
If you have LASIK, you will not receive a contact lens, but rather an eye shield that will be provided to use over your eye prior to bed. You should use the shield nightly for the first 4 days to protect your eye while you are sleeping or as directed by your doctor.
It is important for you to remember the following during this period:
Dr. Anderson will recommend that you rest as much as possible following your procedure, as sleep helps to speed up your recovery tremendously. You may find that placing a cold compress over your eyes while resting is very comfortable and soothing.
You should avoid swimming, hot tubs, or whirlpools for one week. Showers and baths are fine, but try to keep your eyes closed in the shower and avoid getting water and shampoo in your eyes for the first few days.
Dr. Anderson will recommend you avoid eye makeup, gardening and dusty, dirty environments for one week. Smoking is allowed, but you may find that smoke will be quite irritating. Watching TV and reading will strain and irritate your eyes for a few days. These activities should be done in moderation.
If you follow these guidelines, your post-procedure healing should be smooth and trouble-free, and you should expect to enjoy improved vision shortly following your procedure.
It is important for you to understand that follow-up care is as important to your results as the actual procedure. Dr. Anderson will provide the post-operative care, and it is imperative that you keep all scheduled appointments.
Dr. Anderson strongly recommends that all laser-corrected patients have a dilated eye examination performed on an annual basis. This is a proactive measure to ensure that your eye is healthy and functioning properly. When you have this yearly eye examination, Dr. Anderson reports back to the surgeon and the laser center regarding the results and maintains your free enhancements. If you move out or the area, please contact one of Dr. Andersons offices, his staff will coordinate a routine eye examination with another affiliated Optometrist in your new location. This will again maintain your lifetime free enhancements.
